Helltown Brewing and Helping Hops Non-Profit Create Charity Beer

Support a great cause, with a great beer

Helltown Brewing and Ohio based Non-Profit, Helping Hops have joined forces to attribute charitable help to people in need. Helping Hops as an organization facilitates and maximizes fundraising for local charitable causes by mobilizing the passion and generosity of the craft beer community. This seemed like a win-win for Helltown. Helping the community by brewing and selling beer.

Now came time for the beer name and style. After much discussion Helltown Brewing and Helping Hops decided to use a play on words with each organizations name for the name of the beer, while accompanying local demand for the beer style. “Hellping Hops” became the name and New England IPA became the style. “Hellping Hops” a 6.5% NEIPA brewed with Domestic 2-row, Golden Promise, wheat, flaked barley, and hopped with Amarillo, Citra, Cascade and Mandarina Bavaria hops. A soft bodied but crisp IPA with bright citrus (orange) and stone fruit (peach) aromas and orange and lemon flavors that finishes dry and refreshing.

After long talks, Helltown and Helping Hops decided, for this collaboration, to help in the fight against food scarcity around the Pittsburgh area, specifically in Washington and Westmoreland Counties with their respective food banks. Helltown has previously worked with the Westmoreland food bank during the initial stages of the Covid-19 pandemic to donate food and money to families in need. So, how exactly does a beer collaboration benefit a charity? This is how it works, for every draft sold out of Helltown’s Taprooms $1.50 will be donated, while $1.00 from every 4-Pack sale (or $6.00/case) will also be donated! Cases and kegs of “Hellping Hops” will be distributed exclusively throughout Helltown’s four Taprooms located in Export, Houston, Mt. Pleasant, and Pittsburgh’s Strip District. Prices for “Hellping Hops” are as followed, $17.00/4-Pack* or $88.00/Case* and $6.00/draft*.

“Hellping Hops” will be available in limited amounts starting February 22nd, 2021.

*prices may vary*

Helltown takes Bronze in English-Style Brown Ale at GABF

Helltown Brewing took home Bronze in the English-Style Brown Ale Category at the Great American Beer Festival Competition in Colorado for their Mischievous Brown Ale.

The Great American Beer Festival is the world’s largest commercial beer competition, presented by the Brewer’s Association, and recognizes the most outstanding beers produced in the United States. Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals were awarded on October 5th at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, in 107 beer categories covering over 174 different beer styles, establishing the best examples of each style in the country.

Mischievous Brown is a Helltown favorite—a traditional southern English-style brown ale, brewed with European malts to make it a rich, malty, full-bodied ale with a subtle hint of fruitiness on the nose and palate.

“We are honored to have won Bronze at the GABF over the weekend,” says founder and president of Helltown, Shawn Gentry. He continues, “It is a great achievement for the team to have competed against many accomplished breweries from across the country and be recognized for the quality of our beer.”

In the 33rd edition of the GABF competition, 9,497 entries were submitted to the general competition, along with 113 Pro-Am and 70 Collaboration entries. The beer was made by 2,295 breweries from across the nation, with entries from all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Judging took place over the course of three days, with an international panel of 322 judges from 18 countries.

“This year’s GABF competition was the largest and most competitive to date,” said Chris Swersey, competition manager, Great American Beer Festival. “The beers and talent were as impressive as ever, and I’m thrilled to congratulate this year’s winners for their achievements in brewing.”

Local Pittsburgh Musician, Byron Nash, and Helltown Brewing Collaborate on BLQ Metal IPA

PITTSBURGH, PA – May 29, 2019, Local Pittsburgh musician, Byron Nash, and Helltown Brewing, an independent craft brewery with locations in Mt. Pleasant, PA and Export, PA reintroduce BLQ METAL – a west coast style IPA.

Byron and Helltown Brewing were originally paired together to create a collaboration for Fresh Fest 2018 – the nation’s first Black brew festival. To find out more about Fresh Fest 2019, you can get the skinny on their website, https://freshfestbeerfest.com/ .

“We are participating in Fresh Fest again this year and there will be additional announcements to follow in the upcoming months, but we enjoyed last year’s BLQ METAL collaboration with Byron so much that we decided to revisit it independent of this year’s event,” stated VP of Sales & Marketing, Rob Johnson. Rob also added, “We really wanted to take everything up a notch and improve upon what was set in motion last year. We feel that the beer, marketing, and musical components of the collaboration have evolved well and we are having a ton of fun with it all.”

Brewer, Pat Harris, had the following to say about this year’s version of BLQ METAL. “BLQ Metal 2.0 is a west coast style IPA, 6.5% abv, golden-straw color, hopped with Simcoe, Centennial, Chinook, and Galaxy. Bitterness is present but not aggressive, light bodied with a semi-dry finish. Aroma is citrus fruit with some piney/grass that carries through the flavor with a little earthiness in the finish . . . an old school IPA with the bitterness dialed back just a bit.”

Helltown Brewing’s Graphic Designer, Allison Pittler, responsible for the photography, video production, and content creation associated with BLQ METAL shared this about the experience. “We wanted the passion and creativity of Byron and the brewers at Helltown to be the emphasis of our marketing for BLQ METAL. It’s been so awesome to see the project take shape and have the opportunity to work with such talented individuals.”

Byron Nash added, “It’s my extreme pleasure to be able to collaborate with Helltown on the BLQ Metal series. This time around we went for a more straight-forward, Pale Ale that’s perfect for summertime drinking and gets you in touch with your inner rock star!”

This year’s rendition of BLQ METAL will debut at 4 PM on Friday, June 7th at the Federal Galley on Pittsburgh’s North Shore. A live performance by Byron Nash from 7 PM – 9 PM will accompany the debut that night. There will be additional events scheduled throughout the summer.

Helltown Brewing was started in 2011 by Shawn Gentry and several homebrewing friends. We found a used 15-barrel brewing system in Colorado, and set-up shop in the old mechanic’s garage in Mt. Pleasant, PA. We have since moved the bulk of our operation to our new facility in Export, PA. Quality is our main focus. We use high-quality grains for all of our beers, and aren’t sparing when it comes to hops. While we work on expanding, we will not sacrifice the quality of our brews. We are also committed to our community. All spent grain is donated to local farmers, and our merchandise is bought from local businesses where possible. We support a variety of local charities in Mt. Pleasant and Pittsburgh.
